CubeMars TW-40A-12S (2 pcs/set)

The TW-40A-12S is an electronic speed controller (ESC) that CubeMars developed specifically for its SW and DW series underwater thrusters. Each set contains two ESCs, so two thrusters spinning CW and CCW can be driven at the same time. It runs on a 6S to 12S LiPo or Li-ion battery input (about 22.2 to 44.4 V), and its fully sealed housing is rated IP67. The manufacturer recommends it for the SW7, SW12, DW10 and DW15 thrusters.

• Fully sealed waterproof housing. Designed for underwater use, the housing resists pressure and seawater corrosion.
• Proprietary startup and direction-switching algorithm. The motor starts without jerks and transitions between forward and reverse are smooth, which makes precise control under water easier.

Typical applications include ROVs and AUVs with SW7, SW12, DW10 or DW15 thrusters, unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), electric surfboards and R&D projects developing underwater propulsion systems.

Is it enough for your project?

The choice depends on the thruster. CubeMars recommends the TW-40A-12S for the SW7, SW12, DW10 and DW15, and the TW-80A-12S for the more powerful SW17, DW20 and DW25. According to the product specification, the TW-40A-12S delivers 25 A continuous and 45 A peak for less than 10 seconds with adequate heat dissipation.

The throttle signal range is 1000 to 2000 µs, the motor stops at the 1500 µs midpoint and both directions of rotation are supported. Signal frequency is 50 to 400 Hz. Operating temperature is -20 °C to 65 °C, and standby draw is at most 50 mA at 48 V.

How it compares to similar models

• TW-80A-12S. 40 A continuous and 90 A peak with the same 6S to 12S input. It measures 83 x 35 x 22.8 mm, weighs 149.33 g and is recommended for the SW17, DW20 and DW25.
• ESC in the W30 kit. The W30 ESC-6S-45A supplied with the W30 thruster kit runs on 4S to 6S batteries and delivers 45 A continuous. The TW-40A-12S is designed for the higher-voltage SW and DW thrusters.

Frequently asked questions

How many ESCs are in a set?

Two. Each set contains two TW-40A-12S units, so two thrusters can be driven at the same time.

Can it run out of the water?

The user manual states that the ESC must be used under water, because cooling depends on it. The copper nozzle on the ESC, 4 mm in outer diameter, can be connected to a water pump line. According to the manual, below 90 °C is considered safe, and monitoring temperature over the serial port is recommended.

Which cables does it have?

A red and black power input cable, three black phase output cables, one signal cable and one serial port cable. Power and motor wires are 14 AWG.

Does the throttle need calibration?

The throttle range can be calibrated. The maximum and minimum signals are taught following the steps in the manual, and 1500 µs is then used as the zero throttle point.
